The Magdalene laundries, where innocent young girls were treated as sinful, shameful creatures have been well documented and many true and fictional stories have been written about them. Here they are again part of a story, a tragic and deeply poignant one, but for me this particular book stands out above most I have encountered. Early on – not a plot spoiler – a young girl is brutally raped and what follows is truly horrific, as she is further victimised by those wanting to hide her shame and the shame to her family. This is a story with more than one secret and the author deftly tells the tale with intelligent, well-crafted style that had me engrossed throughout. The narrative is strong but the dialogue was superb. I could hear the voices and while I would offer a word of caution, it is only relating to the harrowing nature of the story not the quality of the book. A really well deserved five star read for me.

A powerful and gripping story of a young girl being punished by society's own flaws. Raped by a priest, Kathleen is sent to a convent, where she's repeatedly punished by the nuns. She's even made to feel responsible for the defects of her poor baby. The priest isn't punished for his sins but she is. I've never heard of this convent but it's supposed to be a real place.
The story follows Kathleen and her second child where she has more problems and issues. If only she had told her mother the truth from the beginning.
Joanna Warrington’s portrayal of fourteen-year-old Kathleen was so clear and personal, there was an immediate reader connection to this novel, Every Family Has One. I could relate. The Liverpool she described in 1974 seemed like the life my Roman Catholic girlfriend, who ended up in a school for naughty girls, must have experienced. It seemed that the fate of many a young woman of those times wasn’t brought about so much by their action but by what was done to them by others.
The story is outstanding.
This is a well-written, researched story about the blight of a young teenager raised in a strict Catholic home after she becomes pregnant. It all begins on Kathleen’s way home after a concert when she runs into a priest, a man she trusted, but he turns into a villain. She didn’t dare tell her mother who had raped her for fear her mother wouldn’t believe her. Who would believe a teenage girl over a priest? She kept the name of the assailant a secret. But when she ends up pregnant, Kathleen becomes the perpetrator and not the victim in her mother’s eyes. Her mother, with help from the priest, wants to hide her daughter’s shame and sends her off to the Magdalene Laundry in Ireland to have her baby and give it up for adoption. What happens there causes struggles and heartache for Kathleen that stays with her as she becomes an adult. Later in the story, she discovers she isn’t the only one who keeps devastating secrets.

Ms. Warrington, the author, did an exceptional job in bringing Kathleen and the other characters to life. I felt all the turmoil and sadness she encountered as a result of a violent act. This is a well-crafted story and I’m looking forward to reading the sequel, The Catholic Woman’s Dying Wish.

First and foremost, Every Family Has One is a stand-alone novel, however I strongly recommend you read its prequel, The Catholic Woman's Dying Wish. EFHO, tells a poignant tale about circumstance that caused fourteen year old Kathleen (daughter of the Catholic woman, Maria) to be sent away. A secret Kathleen held inside so as not to upset her mother or shake her faith. It had been the family priest who raped Kathleen when she was on her way home from a concert, and young Kathleen intuitively sensed her mother, Maria, would be more shattered by who impregnated her daughter than she was over the pregnancy. This it only the beginning of the terror Kathleen pays for a sin she did not commit, however is made to feel like the worst being God ever created. By her mam, by the priest, and by nuns who worked inside the Magdalene Laundry in Ireland, where she was sentenced to go have her child, then adopt out. Her baby girl was a stillbirth with slight deformities, thus this young girl was made to feel even worse for creating a monster. Not to mention, bringing immense sadness to the couple awaiting the child, whom had paid the nuns handsomely to adopt as their own. These awful nuns shamed every unwed mother as though they could never undo their sins.

Decades later, a married Kathleen gives birth to a boy, whom she protects to a fault. Keeping a child under ones wing is putting things mildly as Kathleen is downright paranoid about her son, even as he reaches manhood.

Without writing spoilers, I must say things take a turn when Faye, enters this story, and another shocking truth get revealed.
Albeit the term ‘Every Family Has One’ was thrust upon Kathleen as though she was the family outcast, readers soon learn this title refers to others. This is an open letter about staggering secrets and complicated relationships, proving skeletons in the closet just might bond together those in need of family.
