I fell head over hills in love with Academy: Ghost Bird. I had some high hopes for Scarab Beetle. But alas, they were dashed.

Were I to narrow down my biggest problem with this book, it would be the love triangle. Now how does a book based on the premise of one woman getting to have a bunch of hunky guys willing to share her for the forseeable series? By introducing another man who is not part of the group that she gets frisky with. Frankly, that just pissed me off. If I wanted your classic standard dramatic romance about choosing who to side with, I'd have read one. This was supposed to avoid that. I mean, there'd be enough drama with the guys coming to terms they like the same girl but would rather share her so they can keep being like family. Why do you even need this extra bit of conflict?

Secondary problem is that I don't like Kayli. Just point blank. If I can't find a fondness for a character, I can't be bothered to really care about their story. Which is unfortunate because there's a character in this book that connects to Ghost Bird that makes me really intrigued. But not enough to spend $5 on.

This book I happened to get when the offer was free. Which I'm glad about because I don't intend to continue.

Maybe others would like better. I imagine those who are not necessarily looking for romance. But if you are like me and like your romance and specifically wanted the fantasy of romance with multiple guys? I wouldn't give this one a shot.

The Academy Thief The Scarab Beetle Series Volume 1 C L Stone 9781496017222 Books Reviews

What I didn't like. With almost monotonous regularity, the heroine finds herself in steamy bedroom scenes with a succession of young men, a situation I had difficulty getting my head around.
At the end of the book, we still have no clear idea of what the Academy is, how it operates and what it really stands for, one-minute professing noble ideals and the next saying they can never be achieved.
What I loved about the book was the character development, each of the characters we are introduced to has meat on the bones from the boy who is concerned his girl-friend will find out he is working with a girl, to the boy whose brother says is gay. There is a ton of testosterone, mixed with good servings of millennial man.
I loved the potential in the plot and for that alone it is worthwhile progressing to book 2.
The ending is always a teaser for the next book, but this ending caught me somewhat off guard and made a compelling reason to read more. Although I hope that Jess will at least be honest about her relationships I am looking forward to finding out more about her world, and about the academy that appears to have adopted her.
I liked it at first, it sounded like your typical zero to hero story so I thought it would be a good read. I was wrong. She is a pickpocket with morals, who also has family issues and a group takes an interest in her talents. The group turns out to be four, eighteen year old boys who in her opinion, "look good." Then I started to worry about the direction this story was going. The group lead her to a party where this guy takes an interest in her physique. She also starts to get in too close encounters with the boys. Yep, this was going to turn into those kind of stories, the kind of stories where the girl has roaming lips. It was such a waste of a book.

She also seems to forget completely about her brother and strikes me as the impulsive and out of control type since she hits others but doesn't expect to be hit back and shot two people out of impulse.
I usually don't take the time to write negative reviews, but I just had to for this one. I was hopeful that this would be one of the good ones because the writer is said to be a USA Today bestselling author, and the writing seemed okay. No typos, no grammatical errors. It's why I forced myself to finish the book even after I grew frustrated with the main character, Kayli. I kept hoping that there would be some saving grace in the end, but there wasn't. I downloaded this for free, but even then I paid too much for it. I want to like Kayli, but come on, she has the hots and makes out with all men she meets? And considers living in with each of them? The characters aren't developed; they all sounded the same, and the author's efforts to give depth to some (like Marc) fell flat. The men are almost all in the same age range, all attracted to her, and are all nice and kind, even the antagonist. Not one character here is well-rounded. If you value your time, save it and don't bother downloading or reading this. The author must have paid for all those 5-star reviews; I really can't imagine giving more than 1 star for this one. Truly awful. The editor should be fired for giving the go-signal to publish this.
I really wanted to give this book a shot even though I had read some pretty bad reviews about it. Some books the reviews aren't always correct but this one was pretty accurate. I wanted to like this book, and it started out pretty good but then things took a turn for the worst. I thought the main character was funny and strong and brave in the beginning of the book but about halfway through she turned into someone else. I like books that have multiple love interest but this one is a little crazy and unrealistic. I had to force myself to read through the last few chapters and even then I skipped over a lot of it.
I am 78 % into this book and I am sorry to report that it is awful----the author repeats again and again about the main character attraction for every boy/man character---example every time she comes into contact with a main male in the story she describes them as handsome-broad shoulders--muscle--etc. in the 78% I have read she has done it 15 to 20 times-------Also she has mentioned her brother at least 10 time how she has to protect and help him and he isn't even in the story line.
The main thing about this book is if there is a story line(which I can't figure out what it must be) it is taking a ridiculous path to get to it, a very unbelievable path.
I am giving up on reading any more---I feel I have wasted enough time on a very bad book!
